The Nerdery - Overnight Website Challenge

Kansas City 2017, February 25-26

PrincipalsConnect

Paired with 418

PrincipalsConnect recruits, trains and supports retired professionals who volunteer with principals of urban schools. We attract professionals who have led organizations and can provide help with human resources, legal, marketing, fund raising, project management, finance and many other areas.

We believe that retired leaders who are involved with urban schools can advocate for resources and changes so that all children have an excellent education, giving them the opportunity to succeed. Key components of the program include:

1. A rigorous selection process

2. Comprehensive training program

3. A connecting app/website to schedule volunteering

4. A bricks and mortar meeting place for volunteers

Carol Hallquist spent 32 years at Hallmark as a general manager of product lines, leader of the Gold Crown retail network, new ventures and the Hallmark Corporate Foundation. She spent last year at Harvard developing a program that professors and education leaders believe is the only one of its kind. Now, we're ready to launch PrincipalsConnect in KC.

What new functionality we are looking for

This is a brand new organization! Your work is critical to our test launch. We need:

A home page that tells our story

A listing of retired professionals and their skills

A listing of urban principals and their needs

A mechanism for rating the experience

A way to track hours

How the new functionality will help

We can't launch PrincipalsConnect without the capability of a website/app. Critical to our mission is the ability to connect volunteers with principals.

Dr. Mark Bedell, superintendent of KC Public Schools loves our program! He's identified three principals and schools to be part of a test launch in August.

How our organization will use the technology

Principals will look for volunteers with skills they need.

Volunteers will search for tasks where they have expertise.

Our staff will track hours, satisfaction and perform follow-up based on results.

The public and funders will turn to our web site to see what we're all about.

Who will use the technology

As stated above, we can't launch with your help! Every volunteer and principal will use this web site.

Carol and I worked together at Hallmark for close to 30 years. During that time I can say unequivocally that she is a consummate professional who garnered the respect from both her peers and subordinates. Carol has always had a passion for urban education, so it is exciting to see her leverage those many years of experience to that world. This website will go a long way to supporting urban principals in providing a better student educational environment.

I spent four years working with Carol Hallquist on the board of Operation Breakthrough. I can tell you that she's extremely dedicated to improving the educational opportunities for kids in the urban community. I've seen that commitment in her volunteer work, her tireless efforts on our board and also last summer when she taught classes with her daughter in a Kansas City summer school program. When I spoke to Carol's class, I was hoping I could say at least one thing that would help impact their lives. Well, Carol makes that kind of impact every day and I can't imagine a time when she will give up that mission.

No surprise that Carol has pinpointed a critical gap in our education leadership sector and found a way to help bridge it. PrincipalsConnect not only has the potential to help education leaders become more effective in their professional work, but will also engage members of the community in new ways with public schools – building a greater sense of ownership and responsibility over time for student academic and life outcomes.

I have been fortunate to know and work with Carol Hallquist in multiple ways over 25 years. Her focus, passion, drive, and iterative learning are second to none. These leadership strengths, coupled with a terrific network and a gift for energizing others towards her vision, ensure that this important venture to improve urban education (and be a national model) WILL BE successful.

This Website/app is a critical step and Carol will absolutely make the most of it. I am confident that you will see dieect results from your development/support efforts and be proud that you were a part of this novel concept early on.

Carol Hallquist is a deeply committed champion for her community and she has put forth extraordinary time and effort into Principal Connect, an innovative, supportive service to urban educators and administrators. I applaud her efforts and am pleased to submit this endorsement.
Carol and I were Fellows together in Harvard's Advanced Leadership Initiative, where I saw her apply strong leadership expertise and outstanding business acumen to this initiative. I am confident that this program will be a resounding success and could well serve as a model for other communities to follow. How do I know this? Because Carol has the vision, the tenacity, the relationships, the focus and the unfailing commitment to deliver a program that is sound and meets the needs of her community. Carol has my vote!!

Carol is an visionary leader with a passion for making an impact on urban education that is unmatched! Her vision in this space is impressive and backed by years of experience. I have worked for and with Carol many times over 20 years on both for profit and non profit ventures - she knows the capabilities needed for success on each side well. Connecting the two for better outcomes is brilliant. Her program is novel and needed. A well designed web/mobile platform enabling this very important work would be transformative to the impact. Please help make this happen!

I have known Carol Hallquist for many years and have witnessed her creativity, leadership and innovative approach to a variety of executive roles at Hallmark cards. She has been committed to community service both at a personal and corporate level and played a key role in recruiting myself and many others in mentoring "mom's' for a new program that launched eight years ago at Operation breakthrough as she understood the important role parents play in the education process. She has been actively involved in board roles and soliciting support for improving education and resources in our urban core. I look forward to seeing the impact she will make as an on going catalyst for change in this area.

We are so fortunate to have innovators like Carol Hallquist interested and involved in supporting Kansas City urban educators with tools and resources like the breakthrough concept PrincipalsConnect. I have known Carol for numerous years through her philanthropic leadership and our mutual participation in The International Women's Forum. Very important to me as a professional educator involved for many years in urban school reform is Carol's personal commitment and investment of time and energy as a volunteer in classrooms as well as her professional development in the field. What a difference it will make to have a customized website to ease the access to skilled and trained volunteer experts whenever a principal requires such support.

Carol is an inspiration; she retired after a hugely impactful business and philanthropic leadership career, and not 24 hours later embarked upon her first truly entrepreneurial endeavor. Driven by a lifelong passion for solving urban education challenges, Carol has gone about this journey in her usual thorough way. Being accepted at both Harvard and Stanford, for gods sake, she harnessed national resources to study the issues and test her assumptions and solutions.

Like a top entrepreneur, she pivoted many times to land on the current innovation to solve on two levels. Bring together talented retired professionals and educators who lack resources so that retirees are valued contributors and schools gain community support they otherwise could not afford. Uber meets Match.com. Carol meets Goliath. Goliath will be slayed!

Marrying Carol's will and talent with innovation as the super creative Nerdery cohort can provide is a solution for our urban children and our entire community. Having this innovation borne in KC which, if successful, can be adopted nationwide, is truly a leverage of the resources the Nerdery can provide.

Carol Hallquist is a person who gets things done and she does so by activating her large, supportive network and creating effective collaboration. There are many people who are passionate about improving our society, but Carol is excellent at turning that passion into action. I have known and worked for her for years, most recently on the board of Turn the Page KC, an organization that seeks to unite our community's many education initiatives in an effort to raise the reading levels of children. She is always positive and is an inspiration to so many people. She will be suuccessful becuase she seeks input, adjusts her plans and develops processes built on sound thinking and forward thinking ideas. I can think of no better choice for this award!

Carol Hallquist was a friend and colleague of mine as a recent fellow at Harvard. Her commitment to improving urban education is inspiring and her passion for making a difference for everyone involved -- students, teachers, administrators and communities -- is tremendous. Nothing will stop Carol from pushing forward; she is selfless when it comes to this urban need. It was amazing that she chose to spend last summer teaching life skills for the Young Ambassadors program -- how many people would step directly into the shoes of those she hopes to serve to learn firsthand about the issues and challenges? Carol and PrincipalsConnect could not be more deserving of your funding!

I have known Carol Hallquist over 30 years. She is smart and energetic. She has decided to use her time and talent to help children in Kansas City and that is fantastic for our town. Not only has she make this decision but she spent a year at Harvard learning how to do it in the best way possible. That is dedication! I have no doubt that her new endeavor will be a great success.

Carol Hallquist is a talented, dynamic individual who has a passion for promoting, fortifying and improving urban education in Kansas City. She believes it is not only her duty but also her joy to mentor and to help foster educational excellence in the urban area. Carol and I were Fellows at the Advanced Leadership Initiative, Harvard University, 2016. During our year together I had the honor of becoming her friend and colleague. Right from the start, Carol articulated her vision to initiate change in the Kansas City education landscape. Carol fully understands the value of bringing the experience, talent and wisdom of retired, professional talent into underserved schools. Through her focus groups she learned that these efforts would be best maximized by connecting with the school Leaders. Hence PrincipalConnect was formed. I have no doubt that Carol's efforts will bring about results. She will leverage her own passion and talent to engage her community. She will bring her collaborative skills to work closely with the educators. The true winners will be young students of Kansas City. This will be a win for everyone!
Please consider supporting the efforts of PrincipalConnect!

I had the pleasure of getting to know and working with Carol throughout 2016 as Harvard University Advanced Leadership Fellows. The purpose of the fellowship is to motivate, educate and focus successful leaders in a variety of fields to utilize their experience to help others. Carol focused on her community of Kansas City from the beginning of the program and applied her abundant energy to improving education for inner city youth. Cariol is an inspiration to all us Harvard Fellows, due to her focus, commitment and work ethic. She has no doubt the urban schools need PrincipalConnect and those of us who are retired executives know it will work. Carol will make this happen and will make a real difference for the students in her schools. Principals and teachers are leaders in their schools, but often without the training those of us in business receive. Carol has devised a system to change that. We are all confident of her success.

Carol Hallquist's commitment to improving local and national urban education can be traced through her significant involvement in multiple urban education programs over many years. She has been a board member of Turn the Page KC, an operation to achieve reading proficiency at or above grade level for all Kansas City third graders; she was also on the board at Operation Breakthrough, where she promoted early childhood programs.
As a member of the Regional Advisory Board for Teach America, Carol has dealt with the concerns facing schools, teachers, and of course students, in communities across America.

Her commitment to improving the state of urban education is a long standing one. By giving Carol Hallquist and PrincipalsConnect the Nerdery grant, you will allow them to advance farther and faster than they can without it, with the tools necessary to reach and to share their practices with other involved and committed education professionals. She won't let you down.

Ambitious. Practical. Tireless. Inclusive. Passionate! Carol Hallquist is these things and so many more. The lucky schools that participate in the initial trial run don't know how fortunate they are. Soon they will. The help from the nerdery group to get this project off to a swift and successful beginning will be an enormous force-multiplier.

I have nothing but praise for Carol Hallquist. Frankly, I don't know anyone like her. On one side, she is incredibly resourceful and focused, and on the other, she is kind and generous. Her obvious experience and talents speak for themselves, but they don't tell the entire story. It is a lucky organization, company or individual who will benefit from Carol's efforts.

Carol Hallquist is an active and energetic supporter of urban education. I've known Carol for about ten years. We worked together on the Board at Operation Breakthrough which she chaired in 2013. I worked for Carol Hallquist for 5 years when she lead Hallmark's Corporate Foundation. She is passionate about insuring all children receive the quality education they deserve. She has served and lead the boards of numerous educational nonprofits and has been laser-focused on developing the plan for Principal Connect this past year. She has the energy, smarts, connections, and compassion to make this a really helpful tool for urban schools, so I vote for Carol!

Our Mission

Our theory of change: When retired business executives help urban principals become effective leaders, teachers and students will thrive. Last summer, we conducted 12 focus groups with teachers, principals, students, parents and community leaders. When asked what was the most important action that could improve education in Kansas City, great principal leadership came to the top of every group's list. When schools have great principals, they attract great teachers, ample resources and a spirit of achievement. Children in these schools get a good education. Retired professionals want to give back to their communities. But they want the flexibility that a career didn't provide. They want to use their skills and their brains. Principals are overwhelmed by so many tasks--hr, legal and budget issues take them away from time with teachers, students and parents. PrincipalsConnect helps urban principals reach experts who will provide free help and advice. Principals are relieved--retired professionals feel fulfilled.
